My P3 Win XP machine was deprived of Internet for last three weeks due to Error 678 when connecting to BSNL Dataone broadband service.

Finally managed to resolve the issue.
Thanks to

This error normally occurs when using Windows XP.

This can be resolved by following these steps:

* Restart your computer and wait until all applications have completely loaded before trying to reconnect.

* Click on the Start Menu and then select Run. In the box which appears type the word command in order to open the command prompt and then click OK. In the black command prompt window, type netsh interface ip reset log.txt and click on Enter on your keyboard. Then type exit into the command prompt and then click on Enter on your keyboard. Now restart your computer and reconnect to the Internet.

You can add the /nomutex switch or parameter to existing Google Talk shortcut, or create a new shortcut with the /nomutex command line parameter.

To create a new shortcut for Google Talk:
Right-click on the desktop or anywhere you want to place the GTalk shortcut.
Select New on the right click context menu.
Then select Shortcut.
Copy and paste the following line to the text box when prompted to type the location of the item:

“c:\program files\google\google talk\googletalk.exe” /nomutex
Click on Next.
Give the shortcut a proper name such as Google Talk or Google Talk Multiple or Google Talk Polygamy.
Click OK until you are done.

To edit existing Google Talk shortcut:
Right click on the Google Talk shortcut.
On the right click contextual menu, click on Properties.
Go to Shortcut tab on Google Talk Properties window.
On the Target textbox, add in the /nomutex to the end of the line so that it looks like below (or you can simply copy and paste the below syntax and replace the original).

“c:\program files\google\google talk\googletalk.exe” /nomutex
Click on OK.
